Gugulethu Women’s Circle: From Groceries to a Community Bakery
How twelve neighbours turned a grocery stokvel into a registered co-op bakery that now supplies three schools.
The circle began in 2019 with a simple bulk-buy rotation. When members saw how much they saved, they asked: what if we pooled for equipment, not only groceries?
Today they operate a small bakery with shared shifts, transparent books, and a waiting list of young bakers who want to learn the trade.
Their treasurer shares the ledger template they use so other groups can copy the model.
