What makes this stokvel unusual is its “solidarity tier”: members who can afford an extra R200 opt in, and the pot is ring-fenced for school fees only.

They partner with one high school’s bursar to pay vendors directly-no cash in hand, less dispute.

We spoke to five families whose children matriculated because of it.
